Fabric Requirements: One Fat quarter bundle unless you would like to add the long strip borders then you will need 1/2m for the inner border and 1m for the outer borders.
Divide the fat quarters into light and dark fabrics.
The light fabrics are used for the backgrounds.
There are 12 blocks in total. 4 of each style.
Background Blocks - Cut from the light fabrics.
Cut 8 x 10 ½” Squares for House block & Heart Flower block
Cut 8 x 8 ½” Squares for Small Flower with three leaves block & Large Flower with two leaves block
Trace the applique shapes onto your applique paper (or use your favorite method of applique). There is no need to reverse any shapes as they are all symmetrical.
My favorite method to applique is to use the Applique paper from Hugs n Kisses and then use invisible thread to machine stitch the shapes into place.
Also, when I trace and then cut out the applique paper, I usually just use the outline of the shape as shown below. This way reduces the bulk and saves on Applique paper too.
Make four (4) of each block
Also, cut 72 x 2 ½” squares.
Sew 9 onto each of the 8 ½” blocks as shown below.
Trim the new blocks to 10 1/2” if needed.
NB: The above diagrams are not to scale.
When you have finished your applique arrange the blocks in four rows of four.
You can rotate the flower blocks to create different patterns with the 2 ½” edges.
See the diagrams below as both are different.
There are two options
Cut the remaining fabrics into 2 ½” squares and sew around the edges in two rows. You will need 208.
Cut 2 strips for the Inner borders. i.e., 2 X 1½” x 40” and 2 X 1 ½ x 42.5”
Cut 2 Strips for the Outer Border i.e., 2 X 5” x 52.5” and 2 X 5” x 52.5”
You can also make the center circles different sizes.
