Petra Prins is a Dutch quilter, fabric designer and author whose work has helped bring the rich history of Dutch textiles to quilters around the world. A lifelong collector of antique quilts and fabrics, Petra fell for the bright, intricate chintzes produced in the Netherlands between the 17th and 19th centuries — and that passion sits at the heart of everything she designs.

Together with her longtime friend and fellow quilter Nel Kooiman, Petra began reproducing antique Dutch fabrics under the now well-loved Dutch Heritage label. Each design begins with a genuine antique piece, which Petra reworks to preserve the colour, scale and character of the original — so the fabrics feel authentically old even as they come off a fresh bolt.

Alongside her fabric, Petra is the author of several celebrated books published by Quiltmania, including Treasures from Holland and Dutch Heritage Quilted Treasures, and she runs her patchwork and quilting business in the Netherlands. Her quilts and reproductions celebrate traditional Dutch techniques — hexagons, diamonds, tumbling blocks, English paper piecing, broderie perse and appliqué.

At Megelles, we've just begun stocking Petra's Dutch Heritage Collection, starting with a small selection and adding more prints over the coming year. It's a lovely range for Australian quilters who enjoy reproduction work and the timeless beauty of a good chintz — well worth checking back as it grows.
